The Bermuda Triangle is one of the deadliest stretches in the ocean and famous for the notorious mysterious events. A huge amount of ships and aircrafts have disappeared here without a single trace and that’s the point behind all the existing theories that have tried to unravel the mystery of this place starting from waterspouts to aliens and even sea monsters. All those mythical vanishings happened under unknown and unexplained circumstances. All these started in 1945 when five American torpedo bombers and a plane that was sent out to find them vanished without a clue. Since that day another 75 aircraft and several hundred ships have been lost. There is also a story that an aircraft, which was vanished many years ago, was seen again in the sky for a few moments and then again vanished. The latest tragedy happened in 2015 when the cargo ship “El faro” lose its radar connection and disappeared in this region on 1st October. The ship was found wrecked on the bottom of the ocean on 31st October and provoked all the mysteries again. So, here is a quest that takes us over, on and deep into the depths of the deep blue graveyard called ‘The Devil’s Sea’ or ‘The Devil’s Triangle’.
A Brief Description About Bermuda Triangle
It’s a large triangular area between Bermuda, Puerto Rico and southern tip of Florida in the North Atlantic Ocean. The latitude of the region goes from 32oN to 18oN and the longitudes from 81oW to 66oW. The total area of the triangle is more than 1,300,000 sq. Km. However, defining the area is variable from different perspectives and it obviously changes the boundaries. Nevertheless, the area is quite busy for flights and ships. It is an important flight route between Florida and Caribbean, also ships routinely cross it for ports in USA, Europe and Caribbean.
Assumed Explanations About the Mystery
For decades, the specific area of Atlantic Ocean has captured human imagination to link the cause with the effect. Some speculate that mysterious and unknown forces are responsible for this. Different incidents in this place raised the possibility of supernatural powers, invade of aliens/extra-terrestrial beings, relation to lost continent of Atlantis or some special activities in the area. Even it was thought earlier that there was a strange spiral entrance to another dimension in that area which supports the theory of time travel. But that is also a theory till now. Here we will discuss various probable aspects of these mysterious events from the background of science. All of those are still theory; no strong evidence of these have been found and even today, scientists are trying their best to prove them.
a) Compass Problems
This is one of the most cited phrases about the incidents. The explanation says local magnetic anomalies may exist in this area which can divert the direction of north in the compass. The magnetic anomaly may come from variations in the magnetism or chemistry in the rocks like the confirmed anomaly case in the Central Africa Republic.
b) Methane Excretion
Some geochemists claim the presence of natural methane gas coming out of the methane hydrates is responsible for the deadliest incidents that happened in Bermuda Triangle. Methane can be generated from the decomposed organic debris in the sediments below the ocean floor. If the ocean-floor is disturbed by some activity like tectonics, methane gas can be released by the methane hydrates or the methane storage. As this can greatly reduce the density of the seawater, the sinking of ships can be possible
c) Rogue Sea Activity & Violent Weather
The Gulf Stream in the region can cause rapid changes in the weather. The stream can drive floating objects with a surface velocity of 2 m/s. Additionally, the Caribbean Sea creates a shallow water area that can be treacherous for ships. Also, there can be very high sea waves for strong storm activity which can wash away the boats, even the ships.
A team of American scientists from the University of Colorado analyze satellite weather images of this notorious area and noticed a series of unusual ‘Hexagonal’ clouds on them. The meteorologists theorized that these clouds might act like real “air bombs”. It’s believed they are the main cause of the deadly blasts of air which can easily exceed 170 miles per hour. These hurricane-force winds literally “blow up” the air and can generate waves of more than 45 feet in length. No ship can survive such a storm and no aircraft can withstand such a wind. Clouds don’t typically form straight edges. However, judging by satellite images, the Bermuda Triangle is an exception to this rule. The announcement of this theory has motivated a lot of further research and scientists from all over the globe are trying to figure out the reasons for such anomalies are.
Large, deep oceans are always secretive to humans. Whether it is both foul weather or poor navigation, the ocean always remains as a deadly place to human by witnessing mystic events and it will be. However, the Bermuda Triangle is the passage to a high number of ships and planes, hence accidents are not impossible here. Though it does not get into the top 10 accident-prone ocean areas in the world and over 6,50,000 tourists visit Bermuda every year, crossing the area by ships or airplanes. In modern days, there does not seem to have such mysteries. Though a seafloor is a strange place and most of the places are yet to be discovered, there can exist many unravelled unknowns. Well, we can then wait for some big discoveries in the region.
